Booting a live session is slow - fontconfig regenerates its font cache (#1749546)

Using a Thinkpad T420.
Boot was slow, but unlike the original 1749546, all of the delay was in getting to the Try/Install screen. After choosing Try, the live session opened quickly.
Is this a bug: After unmounting a flash drive, the drive disappeared from the list of mountable devices in the Thunar sidepanel. I also got a popup saying loosely "data is being/will be written to the disk; do not remove." The message didn't collapse on its own. After shutdown it turns out my data had been successfully written to the drive.
Is this a bug: On the login screen after suspend, entering un=xubuntu, leaving pw blank, and pressing Space on "Login" gives a momentary blank screen and then returns to the login screen. Entering xubuntu, Enter, Enter or clicking Login works though.
(Apologies for asking "is this a bug." I'm new to this and don't know where to find the list of known bugs or how to add a new one. If someone can direct me I'll be happy to add them if appropriate.)

Everything fine except one little thing:

The ubiquity animation is freezing for app. 8-12 seconds before showing the notice "Please remove the instalatoin medium, then press ENTER". This feels annoying to me and could potentially confuse users eventually leading to feeling forced to reset/power off (see #1761045).

Language: French
System: Desktop: mobo P6T, Intel i7 920, NVIDIA GTX 275.
Standard boot from a live USB. (ISO dd'ed to the USB stick)

Found strings not translated into French. I will see to report them to the TranslationTeam.

Confirmed "Bugs to look for":
1749546: at least one minute to display the menu 'Try or install Xubuntu'
1670610: texts on the menu bar are indeed grey (exactly like the screenshot attached to the report)
1311685: the single box (Messaging Menu) cannot be checked, unless I remove and add the plugin again. Checking the box has no effect though.
1756608: with both themes Adwaita and Adwaita-dark.

The other bugs cannot be reproduced:

Live session from usb stick (3.0) on a lenovo[1] laptop. Saw no message telling me wifi networks were present (I think this message is normally shown?).
The network icon was the up-and-down arrows. Clicking on it showed the wifi networks that were present. One network was shown twice/three times though. See here: https://imgur.com/a/ldSKg
Perhaps connected: I got a message "failed to add/activate a connection"; see: https://imgur.com/a/IPK2N
When I tried to open a jpg, the "Open with" dialogue showed an app with the name "feh" and a generic missing icon: https://imgur.com/a/VbPyY.
Shutting down the session: never got the message "remove the medium and press enter". Had to press the off button long to get the laptop to shut down. Possibly bug: http://launchpad.net/bugs/1761045 (have reported there.)
Have tested the USB stick for errors. None found.
Stopped the test, and will now test on a different laptop.

The other laptop (samsung) does show the message telling me about the wifi networks being present.
Except for the "feh" thing the test on the samsung went swimmingly.

Tried the first laptop again.
The wifi network message really does not show up (rebooted several time).
Clicking on the icon opens the menu and shows the network present. There are some 10 visible.
Clicking a network to connect results in a delay of 7 - 15 seconds before the password dialogue opens.
Once the connection is made, and i click on the wifi icon to open the wireless networks menu, only the network I am connected to is shown. Please see: https://imgur.com/a/c8wBP ; all the others are not to be seen.
Shutting down still took a long time, but did eventually end in a full stop, though no message "remove media" was shown.

Nonetheless: I had a working system on the Lenovo and could use the normal apps...

Sorry about all this :-(
