dell [optiplex] 755 (c2d-e6850, 5gb, amd/ati radeon rv516/x1300/x1550)
testcase: BIOS, manual partitioning, internet, no encryption
repeat of last test..
- / (sda9) partition (now unknown) will be formatted ext4
- re-use of sda8 for /home (no-format)

Lubuntu 20.04 daily failed with

The installer failed to delete partition /dev/sda
Command: wipefs --all /dev/sda9
Failed to erase filesystem signature on partition '/dev/sda9'. Could not delete file system on '/dev/sda9'

I'll mark this "New" again, but it's related I'm 100% sure & most likely duplicate (same issue) as 1864787

dell [optiplex] 755 (c2d-e6850, 5gb, amd/ati radeon rv516/x1300/x1550)
testcase: BIOS, manual partitioning, internet, no encryption
repeat of last test.. no issues last time & now / (sda9) partition has lubu system (format), re-use sda8 for /home (no-format)
I was unable to 'select' format for that partition, so I changed format to 'reseif' then accepted; then returned it to ext4 & format was selected...
fail - "sfdisk --force --append/sda"

dell [optiplex] 755 (c2d-e6850, 5gb, amd/ati radeon rv516/x1300/x1550)
testcase: BIOS, manual partitioning, internet, no encryption
retry: re-use /home (sda8; 23gb) from prior install; newly formatted ext4 fs (sda9; 22gb) for /
the old partition is setup using KDE partition manager on 20.04 instead of using 18.04.4 'live'. it was done it two steps, (1) delete old sda9 then apply, (2) create ext4 partition using space

I could use KDE partition manager to do it this time (before calamares), on prior attempts after a failed install it would error out.
I had to reboot for this, setup partitions then did install
post install, reboot & login to new 20.04 - all looks good (correct partitions etc)
reboot & check out game os; okay
skipped checking 18.04.4 since it hasn't been fixed yet

reboot & lubu 18.04 didn't boot normally, but prior install attempts mucked this up & I'll ignore & fix later
(mucked up in http://launchpad.net/bugs/1864787 and http://launchpad.net/bugs/1851188 prior attempts)
reboot & old game os (redalert2, swbg) worked
reboot & into new 20.04 systeem..

A different & unexpected LXQWt openbox configuration window appeared :)

"Your existing configuration for openbox '/home/guiverc/.config/openbox/lxde-rc.xml' was used to fill the LXQt's openbox configuration '/home/guvierc/.config/openbox/lxqt-rc.xml' If you want to use the predefined LXQt's openbox configuration, run: cp '/etc/xdg/openbox/lxqt-rc.xml' '/home/guiverc/.config/openbox'"

This feels very appropriate; ctrl+alt+T didn't work but it'll be prior configs I had (was opensuse) so I'll ignore. On checking disk space, install was as expected.
