hp dx6120 (mini-tower, pentium 4 dual core, 1.5gb, nvidia 7600gt), have web, updates as per instructions, it auto-offered me correct timezone (accepted),user, slideshow .. FAILED. 'installer encountered error (err 30) read-only file system /target/boot/vmlinuz-4.18.0-7-generic .. often faulty hard disk..' -- looking like hdd at fault, not xubuntu (reading dmesg, smartctl data & esp. journalctl... so xubuntu error message "often faulty har disk" appears spot on!)
system reported bug (1795202), I accepted (so copied here) -- I did some testing of HDD; `badblocks` ran twice with badblocks found!.
I re-run install - worked this time, but NO 'GRUB' menu on reboot (or specifically another older grub menu that listed the opensuse system I replaced with xubuntu 18.10)... I wasn't asked what drive to install grub on. System has more than one hdd (with more than single gnu/linux).
After configuring in BIOS which device (drive) to boot from first (ie. which MBR to use), the Ubuntu GRUB appeared instead of the other-grub that viewed the first boot post-install.
