Test-case Live Session Start

Boot up the image
Ubuntu Mate boot screen is displayed
When ubiquity starts select your language in the left column
Language is selected, all labels are changed to translated versions
Press "Try Ubuntu Mate" and wait for the Live session to start
The default desktop is displayed

Test-case Live Session Usage

Use and execute the default applications found for the desktop enviroment being run
All applications should function without error

Thinkpad T420. Most of what I tried worked. I don't know if any of these are critical bugs.
Like with xubuntu, boot was slow - about 60s until a pointer appeared, followed by desktop. Also it went straight to the desktop, skipping the Try or Install choice.
Power Stats has old bug 1721282, org:Freedesktop.UPower.GeneralError: cannot enable timerstats. This did not use huge amounts of CPU & RAM though, which apparently used to happen.
Mate Tweak: the first time I loaded Traditional, the panels disappeared. In terminal, neither mate-panel --reset nor mate-panel --reset --replace worked. Changing the panel style again brought them back and I could not replicate the disappearance to file a bug.
1765557: Mate Tweak crashed while I was doing other things, with message mate-tweak crashed with SIGSEGV in g_main_context_dispatch()
