After reboot screen resolution was 640x480, even after installing Virtualbox Guest additions and rebooting the resolution was the same.
The system boots to the Boot: prompt, complaining about gfxboot.c32 (see bug 1325801). By typing "live" at the prompt, the system will boot into the live session.
Update. bug 1325801 suggests a workaround of replacing the usb /syslinux/gfxboot.c32 with /usr/lib/syslinux/gfxboot.c32 from 14.04. This allows 14.10 to boot without a hitch from the USB key.
