The beta disc boots and everything starts up but i nevet get the screen that alows me to install or run live cd

Install on IBM Thinkpad R31 went O.K. editing partitioning for a dual boot, other image is Alpha 5. However booting up the resulting installed Beta image proceeds, X widnows initiates O.K., then the laptop freezes up and only thing that functions is power off.
