X won't start on Dell Inspiron e1405 w/ Intel 945GM graphics card.

I tried dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, which didn't help. When I type "startx" I get an error saying (roughly):

"/usr/bin/X11/X
error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libfontenc.so.1
invalid ELF header
errno 111
errno 03"

Loading ACPI modules and starting HALd took too long time.

I found it takes more than half a minute to load ACPI modules and start HALd on my Thinkpad R51e-2xc, with Feisty RC live CD.
The computer looks dead in those two steps.

This problem happened at the first release of Feisty Beta and it was ok after once I upgraded the system.
But now it happened again.

Failedold-database2007-04-18 00:00

I downloaded the 20070415 Desktop CD for i386.
On my system is one problem which is severe:
After going to System->End and choosing Restart
the system shuts down until the CD is ejected but
then the system freezes.
I cannot continue to reboot..I have to totally disconnect from power and then power on.
My system is a Fujitsu Siemens with PentiumIV.

FAIL: X still has issues with ThinkPad T20 (Live-CD)

Normal mode: Blank screen and system lockup

Safe graphics mode: X starts and desktop appears, but in the wrong resolution (800x600 instead of 1024x768). Preferences -> Screen Resolution doesn't show 1024x768 as an option. Can't proceed to install from live mode because Welcome install windows is too large to fit on-screen and buttons at bottom of window are off-screen and cannot be accessed.

Likely related to this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-savage/+bug...

Failedold-database2007-04-18 00:00

FAIL: X fails to load on my macbook pro for the Live CD. I have to manually put in the correct HorizSync and VertRefresh values into xorg.conf and then start X again. I'm not sure, but I think it's related to

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/89853

Also, when I get X to start on the Live CD the mouse is extremely jittery. It jitters about 10 times a second from left to right about 1 or 2 inches at a constant rate. The strange thing is that I can plug in a usb mouse and then put two fingers on the touchpad to make the jittering stop.

X fails to start (actually crashes) on liveCD.

Ubuntu liveCD always started X without crash, from Edgy on until Feisty Beta, the screen was always skewed, but no crash, in Feisty Beta, everything worked right. In RC1 again broken. See bug 83072, where I provide detailed info

Feisty boot fail "can't access tty" IDE SATA problem (#106864)

FAIL: CD Live "can't access tty" will not boot.

Dapper's running great on same system, 1280x960 LCD, Intel 82845G graphics.

Chased around mulititude of boot options and got dozens of screenfulls of errors. Most significant:
...device sda Write cache enabled Read cache enabled doesn't support DPO or FUA. More tweaking on boot commands see lots of "sector errors".
Finally saw a "fsck failed, see /var/log/checkfs" buried in the middle of the messages that roar up the screen. When the messages stop there's not much running so I can't look at or save anything with anything I tried.

The hard drive is an IDE, WDC AC143006. I disconnected it and 20070415 booted right up, no hard drive installed on the computer.

Whatever code Feisty is using to support this IDE drive doesn't work. I plugged the hard drive back in and Dapper booted right up beautifully. Any chance of a package to put hard drive IDE code into Feisty instead of SATA? Otherwise this system's staying with Dapper.

I was mislead from the "can't access tty" so I was chasing screen drivers and graphics modes. If the error had been reported as "fsck error" in the first place I'd have found the difficulty a lot sooner.

Subsequently found cabling the HD to IDE2 while CDROM still on IDE1 permitted successful install. Why should that have made any difference? Dapper ran fine with both on IDE1.
Cheers, Jerry
