...managed to resize an existing NTFS/hidden-fat32 hda, reserving enough space for another hidden partition for ext3-ubuntu-install. repartitioning was fast, and the pre-existing hd-data/OS is intact.

PASS. Only installed to a fixed size /dev/hda1 with a swap at /dev/hda9. The rest of my partitions (hda2, hda3, hda5, hda6, hda7 and hda8) were set to not being touched at all - or indeed mounted. The installation was performed in a simple "Text" way. _Not_ the OEM or in F6 "expert" mode. Grub was installed to /dev/hda1 so that I could use the existing one in the MBR, and just point to Feisty - you know, the easy safe way. I'm an old linuxfromscratch guy.
