repeat; with preparation using kde partition manager.. (cleanup & format sda9; format this time is reiserfs)
as before
sda8 = /home, sda9 = / also using XFS for / (easier for me to see which is which for these re-installs)
but started with `sudo -E calamares -d`
more detail in error message this time :)

dell [optiplex] 755 (c2d-e6850, 5gb, amd/ati radeon rv516/x1300/x1550)
testcase: manual partitioning, re-use sda8 & sda9, / is XFS, /home is re-used
repeat; with preparation using kde partition manager.. (cleanup & format sda9; format this time is XFS)
-- to ensure this works, no format will be done in calamares
i started calamares normally; then decided to use `sudo -E calamares -d` so exited & restarted it
reboot, login to Lubuntu 18.04 system, all looks as expected
reboot, login to new hirsute system,
flashing at sddm was a little annoying so tagging https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1895905 (i'm usually careful to avoid that, and tag only on live testing), but it was evident.. otherwise system is good (errors in terminal expected as called packages not installed due ~format)
I'll close this as valid & assume other OS is good...
