| Using today's image and using usb-creator to burn the image on a USB, I booted into the installer and choose to 'Try Ubuntu'. This booted me to a usable desktop (though there were 2 bugs, see above). I then installed from within the live cd, choose to format the whole disk, with an encrypted home and selected 'install updates' and 'install 3rd party packages'. I got close to the end of the install and it failed, generating the report in 980276.
Rebooting into the installer and installing Ubuntu directly (ie, not going into the live cd environment) worked fine.
