[Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy alpha-3+ i386 desktop daily builds January 24, 25, 26 -- SHOW-STOPPER! Guided entire disk installation fails; manually installed system won't boot kernel.] These daily builds install an unbootable system on hard drive. When re-booted after installation from live CD, the system only boots as far as showing a grub prompt (grub>) and help message above it. Grub does not boot the kernel. Closer examination of the hard drive shows that /boot/grub/menu.lst only has 3 uncommented lines:
default 0
timeout 3
hiddenmenu
There are no lines for title, root, or kernel to boot, so grub doesn't know what to bootload. The downloaded daily images have correct MD5 sums and the burned CDs check ok with Ubuntu "check cd" live CD startup menu on the same CDs.
Also, when installing from Live CD onto a hard drive that already has an earlier version of Ubuntu, using the "entire disk" guided installation option, I get error message "Failed to create a file system. The ext3 file system creation in partition #1 of SCSI1(0,0,0) (sda) failed." I repeated the attempt but got same error. To get it installed, I had to use manual installation, assigning / mount point to the #1 partition with formatting.
