Tests were performed on VMware Fusion 3.1.0 for Mac, host OS was Mac OS X 10.6.3.

To simulate online failure of one disk, this was used:

sudo echo 1 > /sys/bus/scsi/devices/2:0:0:0/delete

Which correctly produced a degraded array and alert from mdadm.
