xserver-xorg-video-intel does not work with 82852/855GM (#108056)

The screen goes black after the Ubuntu logo. I cannot even access the console using Alt+F1.
Starting up in safe graphics mode works.
Tested on an IBM ThinkPad G40 with a 82852/855GM graphics controller.
The "intel" driver fails the test in the Screen and Graphics Preferences utility. I attached the log of the test server run to the bug report.
The "i810" driver passes.

USB keyboard not recognised at startup on Dell Dimension 5150 desktop machine (unable to select any options) - works ok when fully booted up.

The "small" screen saver preview window would only show about a third of a second of animation then freeze - the system didn't lock up, just the animation.

The full-screen screensaver preview showed a dialogue box, but no screensaver.

Failed to start Ubuntu with relatively new hardware. From the initial boot menu, selected default option, "Start or install Ubuntu" (USB keyboard didn't work).

Screen with orange progress bar completed (successfully, as far as I can tell). An extra ghost progress bar was displayed above the real bar once out of five times I tried this.

The next screen gets to the fourth item "running local boot scripts [OK]". The screen blinks three times, then goes dark permanently. There is no CD or hard drive activity after that.

Another attempt to install Ubuntu failed. However, I got much further with this build than with 7.04.

I used the live CD to boot my Lenovo/Thinkpad X60s, and it booted right up, no problems. I tried the graphics-intensive screensavers (GL ones) as well as some others and they seemed to be excellent. No problems

- During the main boot up screen, my USB keyboard was not recognized. Only until the live install booted after the timeout, was the keyboard operational.

- The Ubuntu boot up progress bar had some display issues. There were two static copies of it, both above and below the main progress bar.
